Cosmetics and hygiene products

We are your one-stop full-service partner from the initial product idea to market approval

The market approval of cosmetic and hygiene products requires numerous tests and analyses related to aspects such as safety, efficacy, and quality. Does your product contain harmful microorganisms? Can forbidden chemicals be detected? Which tests substantiate product properties and advertising claims?

These are just a few of the questions that need to be answered during product development. With over 250 employees at seven laboratory locations in Germany and Austria, SGS INSTITUT FRESENIUS is the European center of competence for the analysis and testing of cosmetic and hygiene products. With this network, we can support you throughout the entire product development process and answer any questions you may have.

Your advantage: You receive all services from a single source, allowing you to reduce interfaces within product development and achieve market approval faster.

Overview of our services

Chemical analysis

For cosmetic products, we offer a wide range of investigations. We conduct chemical analyses and quantify active ingredients, excipients, and contaminants. These examinations ensure compliance with all legal parameters and guarantee the product specifications of cosmetic formulations. Additionally, we test parameters that are considered by organizations such as "Stiftung Warentest", "Ökotest", and consumer associations.

Physical properties

Whether pH value, viscosity, freezing point determination or refractive index, our physical laboratory tests cosmetics and associated raw materials for their properties.

Microbiological testing

Microbiological stability is a decisive quality criterion for cosmetic products. In our high-performance microbiology laboratory, we examine and test everything that is important for cosmetics, such as testing for microbial purity of raw materials and finished products, pathogenic germs, total germ count or testing for sufficient preservation.

Stability tests

We carry out stability and storage tests under various climatic conditions as well as their evaluation with the corresponding analytical, sensory and microbiological tests.

Clinical trials and home-use studies to investigate efficacy & substantiate advertising claims

Consumers rely on independent confirmation of the properties and effectiveness of cosmetic products. To substantiate advertising claims, we test cosmetic products in use studies in vivo on test persons in our laboratory, where the results are evaluated by experts such as dermatologists, hairdressers or dentists. In home-use tests, we also test products close to the end consumer with the help of test persons.

Regulatory checks for marketability

Compliance with legally prescribed limit values and the safety of the product are important requirements for marketability. In addition, we carry out label checks in accordance with the EU Cosmetics Regulation and country-specific requirements.

Testing the physical product performance

In-vitro tests also confirm claims and the effectiveness of the products. Our laboratories work with state-of-the-art equipment for cosmetic products, with a focus on objective measurement methods of product performance.

Toxicological Investigation & Toxicological Risk Assessment

Our SGS in-house toxicologists carry out tests and toxicological risk assessments for cosmetic products in accordance with the EU Cosmetics Regulation.

Ecotoxicological and biodegradability tests

In our Bioservice Laboratory we test skin and eye irritations of cosmetic products (raw materials as well as finished products) according to OECD standards using animal replacement methods. Phototoxicity and mutagenicity tests are also carried out here, as well as special tests such as wound healing and HET-Cam tests. This laboratory is also in charge of composting plants, with which the biodegradability of the products is tested and proven.

Packaging test

Our laboratory tests cosmetic packaging for plasticisers and mineral oil residues (MOSH/MOAH).

Audits and certifications

As an independent testing institute, we carry out cosmetics GMP audits, 2nd and 3rd party audits as well as audits according to customer-specific requirements. SGS INSTITUT FRESENIUS Austria GmbH is an accredited certification body for the NATRUE label for natural and organic cosmetics.

  • Declaration and labeling checks
  • Label verification
  • Preparation of safety reports
  • REACH compliance assessments

Chemical analysis

We conduct chemical-physical quality testing, as well as analysis and determination of active ingredients, excipients, and contaminants for all cosmetic product groups and detergents. These investigations ensure compliance with all legal parameters and secure the product specification of cosmetic products.

Additionally, we test specific parameters that are of interest to "Stiftung Warentest" and "Ökotest".
